John Y. Lawrence is a PhD student in Music Theory at the University of Chicago, and adjunct lecturer at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He previously completed a bachelor’s degree at Yale University and a master’s degree at King's College London. His research focuses on listeners’ perceptions of meaning and form in music of the 18th and 19th centuries. His current dissertation project, titled “Listening in Color,” explores the effects of orchestration, dynamics, and registral spacing in music of the early Romantic era.
