John A. Rice, a freelance writer and teacher, studied musicology under Daniel Heartz at the University of California Berkeley (PhD, 1987). His books included Antonio Salieri and Viennese Opera (1998), Empress Marie Therese and Music at the Viennese Court (2004), and Mozart on the Stage (2009). Since 2014 he has published three articles as part of a project to expand Robert Gjerdingen’s galant schematicon.
