Paul Sherrill is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the College of Wooster. He holds a PhD from Indiana University (2016) and a BA from Yale University (2009). His research explores the intersections between musical categories, meaning, and usage, particularly in eighteenth-century vocal music. His dissertation develops a poetics of Metastasian opera seria, uniting a dialogic theory of the da capo form with an expressive interpretation of the exit aria’s function in Metastasian dramaturgy. In related research, he has explored the conventionalized melodic vocabulary of secco recitative and the narrative structure of several of Mozart’s arias. Prior to Wooster, he has taught at Georgia State University and Indiana University.
